  • About Thrift For Good

ABOUT THRIFT FOR GOOD OUR MISSION . To rehome preloved items to reduce waste and help children around the world, in partnership with Gulf for Good. REDUCING WASTE When it comes to reducing waste, we exist to turn the clothing industry on its head. Currently, an estimated 150 billion clothes are produced each year, more than ever before. The resources of water, land, dyes, chemicals, plastic etc that go into each piece means an incredible strain on our environment. The clothing industry is the 3rd biggest carbon emitting industry just behind gas and food. What is more, the human side is often a sad story in clothing production, with low wages in poor conditions and often child labour too. What makes it even worse is that 3/5th of these new clothes make their way into the landfill by the end of one year, either by the brand or individuals themselves. These often make their way into developing countries and are creating large negative socio-economical and environmental impacts. Every piece of textile can be rehomed, upcycled, or recycled and that is what we aim to do. We are zero waste and process everything that comes through our doors. We want to change the way Dubai interacts with fashion, to not only have access to preloved clothing, but to choose second hand first! HELPING CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD We donate 100% of our profits to the children's charity projects of Gulf for Good under Islamic Affairs Fundraising Approval. We work with Gulf for Good to fund projects that sustainable change children's lives around the world in the areas of poverty alleviation, health and education. Once we fully fund a project, we start in on the next. Please see more information on our current and historical projects to date here. We do everything we can to keep our expenses low to contribute more to the kids. This is why we rely on volunteers and sponsors to achieve our mission. We aim to donate 50% of our monthly revenues. OUR VISION . A sustainable world where everyone has what they need to thrive. OUR VALUES . ZERO WASTE We are committed to zero waste: we rehome everything (including repairing/recycling items in partnership with Kiswa ), we offset our carbon emissions through TreeNation , and we use sustainable biodegradable packaging. When we need to purchase something, we buy it second hand. COMMUNITY We want to encourage and grow the preloved market and can only do this by working together. What is more, Thrift for Good is powered by a large group of volunteer supporters. It's only thanks to you that we can succeed - please clear out your used items, shop sustainable fashion, and volunteer to help us sort and sell. JOY What better feeling is there than finding that perfect cheap thrift find? Perhaps a peace-inspiring decluttered house? Or, better yet, knowing you've made a difference in the lives of others? This value of joy is more than a customer satisfaction guarantee; we want to touch lives - yours and the lives of the children we will support. OUR LEGAL STRUCTURE. We are registered under the DED as THRIFT FOR GOOD USED CLOTH TRADING LLC . We are partnered with Gulf for Good, which is registered as a non-profit organization registered under the International Humanitarian City. We have fundraising approval for this initiative from the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department on a rotating basis FOUNDING STORY . With her Masters in Nonprofit Leadership and Philanthropy and over 18 years of experience working with charitable organisations, Jen is passionate about raising funds for children's projects. Her most recent role was as the Operations Manager with Gulf for Good, who raise funds for children's charity projects around the world through adventure challenges. During this time, Jen learned that the biggest barrier for great projects is funding. Yet, there are so many wonderful supportive people interested in giving their used items to a good cause... With other Gulf for Good supporters, Thrift for Good began in February 2020, online in April 2020 and we opened our first store in November 2020. Thrift for Good is a social enterprise born from the vision of a sustainable world where everyone has what they need to thrive. We are so proud to offer a more sustainable option for clothing in the UAE as well as fund beautiful children's charity projects in partnership with Gulf for Good. What we do is only made possible by you. Please clear out your used items, shop our feel good fashion, and volunteer to make it happen.

Sometimes this happens on the same day. Otherwise, it can take up to a week before you start seeing your items in store. B) Needs washing/stain treating/minor repairs - If the item is not perfect, but can be made to be perfect, we do our best. Champions Cleaners sponsors 18kg of washing each week. We pay per kg thereafter. Volunteers take home stained items (worth AED30 or more) and individually treat these. We organize volunteer repair gatherings where we mend clothing that is we can fix. For the items we can't, Stitch In Time and Threadworks kindly sponsors our repairs. C) Imperfect condition and can't be fixed/not worth fixing - we take these items to the weekly flea markets in Zabeel Park, Al Barsha Pond Park, Ibn Battuta etc and sell the items for AED5/piece. We send items we cannot authenticate to The Luxury Closet to sell through their portal. Items that are returned as inauthentic are sold at flea markets. F) High value jewellery and watches - Clara in Gold & Diamond Park kindly sponsor the authentication and valuing of jewellery. We price our items below market rate, calculated based on the market value for the weight/quality of the materials plus the making fee per gram. Max&Max in Times Square Center kindly sponsor new battery watches for us. G) Textiles including sheets, pillow covers and curtains - We donate these to be upcycled into sustainable period pads to be shipped overseas to support girls that would otherwise miss schools without a good solution for their periods. Alternatively, dependent on quantities, we donate these items to K9 Dog Shelter in Jebel Ali.

  • Partner | Thrift For Good

Partners & Affiliates Program Under IACAD approval, Thrift for Good donates 100% of its profits to the children’s charity projects of Gulf for Good, which is a registered non-profit organization under the International Humanitarian City. In order to achieve our goal of raising funds to help children in the form of education, healthcare, and housing, we are always looking to reduce our running costs. We have many different ways that your time and sponsorship can help: 1 Financial Sponsorship To reduce costs, our team is primarily made up of volunteers. However, we have a wonderful paid team of skeleton staff to keep us operational and growing. Covering these salaries is our biggest monthly overhead and sponsorship towards this would alleviate a lot of the pressure as well as enable us to contribute a bigger portion of the funds raised to the chosen charities we sponsor. 2 In-Kind Sponsorship to offset our costs Just as valuable as financial sponsorship, if your company can offer any of the services below free of charge, you will get the benefits of a financial sponsor without the monetary costs. Insurance for stores (property all risk, business continuity, worker liability, & public liability), staff health, and/or motor vehicle Our current needs include: Fire system maintenance Printing Facility maintenance on a needs basis Utilities Volunteer benefits (% discount on your products/services, sponsored lunches, other) Laptops/mobile phones Supplies 3 Volunteer Team Bonding Days A great team bonding activity, up to 10 staff members at a time can take over our Palm Jumeirah branch, helping with sorting donations, stocking and running the store. 4 Group Clothing Drives It doesn't take a lot of clothing to make a big difference... You can organize for your team to declutter for a cause! It is as easy as centralizing a place in your office where people can drop off their items and arranging delivery to our Palm Jumeirah branch. We will provide you with an impact certificate in return (an example can be seen here ), reporting on the difference your team is making through their combined efforts. 5 Lunch & Learn Gather your team during their lunch break to learn more about sustainability in fashion, our work, and how they can help as individuals. 6 Technology Clear Out Have old technology hanging about your office or are you doing an upgrade and want to clear out? Please contribute to us - we will collect, sell your technology and donate 100% of the proceeds to children's charity projects. To coordinate any of the above or discuss other potential collaborations, please be in touch with Jade Povey , our Community Engagement Manager on jade@thriftforgood.org 058 572 6686 Here are the companies that we have worked in the past

  • SOS Children’s Villages in Kyrgyzstan

< Back SOS Children’s Villages in Kyrgyzstan The remote Ananyevo municipality in the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan urgently needs a local meeting point to connect community members and boost learning and social activities. Between September and December 2021, we contributed AED100,000 to build this centre on a plot of land that has been provided by the local government, and running costs to be managed by the municipality. By building such a facility in this rural area, we will be improving the lives of 165 vulnerable families, 180 children and 12,000 inhabitants of the surrounding villages. The community centre is not just a physical structure, but also provides a space where parents receive training courses to increase their employability and parental skills and help with daily challenges. It will also serve as a venue where children play, learn and do their homework, as well as a hub for cultural and sports events. Project update: SOS Kyrgyzstan has now received both funding installments, the first for the foundation, roof and walls. The second installment of AED100,000 was sent February 2023 to install the flooring, plumbing, electricity, internal walls, ceilings and painting to prepare for the handover of the building. The building is now complete and actively serving the community! Documents Supporting this Project View Documents Previous Next Photo Gallery

This project is reaching 45 students in between Beirut and Tripoli and is being implemented by Basecamp/Baytna Baytak. Documents Supporting this Project View Documents Previous Next Photo Gallery
